RickMetzgerThe DemoForum is a regular luncheon event featuring a prominent Democratic speaker.  In January, we switched to a twice a month format - on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.   The site is Kwan's Cuisine, at 835 Commercial St. SE, Salem.  The $11 cost includes a buffet lunch, tea, and gratuity. 

Sen. Rick Metsger is one of four candidates for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.  Senator Metsger was first elected to the Oregon Senate is 1998, where he represents represents Hood County and portions of Multnomah and Clackamas counties.  He was re-elected in 2002 and 2006.  He lives in Welches.  During the 2007 legislative session, Senator Metsger chaired the Business, Transportation and Workforce Development Committee. 

Metsger is perhaps best known for his 16 years as a television anchorman at KOIN-TV.  He currently owns an issues management firm that provides stretegic communications services. 

The Secretary of State is Oregon's auditor of public accounts, the state's chief elections officer and the chief records officer.  The Secretary of State also keeps a public record of businesses authorized to do business in Oregon.

Independent InterventionThe Salem Progressive Film Series continues at the New Grand Theater, 191 High Street NE. The series will be presented the 2nd Thursday of every month, and will include previews, the featured documentary film, expert speakers, post-film discussion, and links to involvement. Admission is $3.00. Doors open at 6:30. This Thursday, the film will be Independent Intervention.

In the theater lobby patrons will find a variety of resource materials on issues related to each evening's film, as well as information on networking/contact opportunities and getting involved in public issues.

Independent Intervention is an award-winning documentary about United States media coverage of the conflict in Iraq. Focusing on the human costs of war, it contrasts corporate-controlled media coverage of the invasion of Iraq with independent media reports of the brutal realities on the ground.

Through discussions with media experts including Amy Goodman, Noam Chomsky, Dahr Jamail, Danny Schechter, David Barsamian, Kalle Lasn, Norman Solomon, and James Zogby, the film investigates important issues and systems that govern today's information flow, and shows how these systems of control reveal themselves during times of political turmoil and war.

Independent Intervention also includes commentary by Howard Zinn, Arundhati Roy, Bill Moyers, Michael Moore, and Jeremy Scahill.

Obama will be in Salem on Friday.  Apparently tickets to see him were gone within one hour of the announcement of his Salem visit.   Similar happenned in Portland & Eugene. 

Rumor has it that Obama may be back in Oregon in April.  If you want to be the first to know about a return visit and you are a supporter, you might consider signing up on the Obama web site.

John Kroger is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Oregon Attorney General.  His opponent in the primary election is State Representative Greg MacPherson.  MacPherson appeared at the February 27 DemoForum.

John Kroger has worked as a criminal prosecutor and a law professor.  He is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School.  As a federal prosecutor, Kroger won major cases against mafia killer Gregory Scarpa Jr., drug kingpin Juan "The Puma" Rodriguez, and other drug traffickers and corrupt government officials.  Krgoer helped prosecute Enron executives.

Kroger first came to Oregon on a cross-country bike trip and later moved here.  Since 2002, he has taught criminal law and legal philosophy at Portland's Lewis & Clark Law School.  Before becoming a prosecutor, Kroger worked as an economic and domestic policy advisor to President Bill Clinton.
