Richard Riggs is a candidate for State Representative in District 20, which includes West Salem, Downtown Salem, parts of South Salem, and all of Monmouth and Independence. He is challenging long-time Republican incumbent, Vicki Berger.  Rich’s website is located at http://RichardRiggs.com .

Rich has served our country and local community his entire adult life. He is currently an elected board member to >Chemeketa Community College representing most of Polk County, and has more than twenty years service in the Navy including wartime service in Iraq in 2003.  Born and raised in Oregon, Rich’s childhood was marked by frequent moves as his parents looked for work when many mills were closing.

It was the economic devastation caused by the closure of the mills in his childhood hometown of Oakridge that prompted Rich to enlist in the Navy at age 17 and to seek the Chemeketa Community College Board seat after retiring from the Navy in 2006.  After seeing how Lane Community College helped many of Oakridge’s unemployed mill workers in the 1980’s, Rich knew that Chemeketa was a natural outlet for him to utilize his two decades of governmental experience and finely honed leadership skills while continuing his lifetime of service in his community.

Rich is a graduate of the Navy’s most difficult technical schools, received a bachelors degree in Mathematics from Oregon State University, and is in his second year of study at Willamette University College of Law.  Rich and his wife Shannon are active volunteers throughout the community.  Shannon won the 2007 Oregon Book award for her first book, Not in room 204, and is a community volunteer for Liberty House and a team member of the Salem-Keizer school district’s sexual abuse prevention team. Rich volunteers as a Rotarian, classroom volunteer at Walker Middle School, and as an instructor at Chemeketa’s Early College High School program.  Rich and Shannon have been married 18 years, and live in West Salem with their two children who attend Walker Middle School.
